Automatic car washes
Fast and cheap. The trade-off is that rotating brushes or cloths touch every car that comes through, and grit trapped from previous vehicles can leave fine scratches — the “swirl marks” you see in sunlight. Wheels and lower panels often come out still grimy. For a quick rinse between proper cleans, they do a job.
Hand car washes
Gentler than brushes when done well, but quality varies a lot. Many are built for volume: one bucket, a quick wipe and a fast vacuum. Better than an automatic for your paint, if the place is careful.
Mobile detailing
The detailer comes to you and cleans the whole car — interior and exterior — methodically. It costs more because it’s a lot more work, but you don’t lose half a day, and the result is a car that’s actually clean rather than “clean from a distance”.
Why swirl marks happen
Swirls are fine scratches in the clear coat, usually from grit being dragged across the paint by brushes, cloths, sponges or a dirty mitt. They’re mostly invisible in the shade and obvious under direct sun or bright lights. Once they’re there, washing won’t remove them; only machine polishing will. The way to avoid them is a wash method that keeps grit off the paint — we explain it in how to wash a car without scratching it.
The cost people forget: time
A car wash price doesn’t include driving there, queueing, waiting and driving home — often an hour or more on a weekend. With mobile detailing, the car is cleaned where it’s parked while you get on with your day. For a lot of people that, more than the result, is the deciding factor.
The interior is the real difference
Most car washes are built around the outside of the car. You sit inside the car, though — and a quick vacuum doesn’t reach seat rails, vents, door pockets or the inside of the windscreen. If the interior is what’s bothering you, compare what’s actually included before comparing prices. Our full detail checklist is a good reference.
Which should you choose?
- Car just dusty, interior fine? A wash is fine.
- Interior grubby, wheels black, haven’t cleaned it in months? That’s a detail.
- Selling the car? Detail. Pre-sale detailing.
- No time to sit at a car wash? Mobile.
A common approach is a full detail every few months, with washes in between. See how often you should detail your car.
